The development of a captivating illustration for the ICFOnians Women in Science Campaign was a dynamic collaboration with ICFO’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. This initiative was established to address the historical gender imbalance in the field of science and promote inclusivity. Now in its 6th edition, the campaign continues to inspire change and nurture a brighter future for women in science.

ICFO’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee is committed to organizing activities throughout the year that stimulate essential conversations and raise awareness about significant issues within our scientific community. Recognizing the urgent need to rectify the underrepresentation of women in the field, the committee launched the annual celebration of ICFOnians Women in Science Month in 2018.

To convey the essence of the campaign, we harnessed imagery that not only resonates with strength, resilience, and empowerment but also with inclusion and diversity. The visuals celebrate women in science, showcasing their accomplishments and determination.

It’s worth noting that the central focus of the graphics is two women, one Black and a 60+ years old. We understand that science and knowledge transcend all forms of discrimination, but these are often marginalized groups within the academic environment. Therefore, we chose to prominently feature and celebrate their presence and participation in science.

Furthermore, we decided to give the graphics an “offset print-vintage” effect. This adds a distinct aesthetic value while also conveying a specific narrative. It reminds us that although the awareness campaign is recent, women have always been present, contributing significantly to scientific knowledge and development.
